San Juan Nepomuceno is a town and municipality in the Colombian department of Bolívar. It is located within the orographic system of the Serranías de San Jacinto. It has an area of 637 km² and is home to the Los Colorados Fauna and Flora Sanctuary, a fundamental reserve for the Red Monkey species, among others of interest.

Route:

  • Starts at 6 a.m. – Departing from Hotel Almirante. In our Air-Conditioned Van we will depart from Cartagena.
  • Around 8:30 a.m. we will be in San Juan Nepomuceno.
  • We will take an ecological hike of approximately 3 hours along the La Garra del Jaguar trail.
  • Later we will visit the Culinary Heritage Factory of San Juan Nepomuceno.
  • At 2:30 p.m. we will be starting the tour back to Cartagena.
  • We will arrive at the Hotel Almirante around 5 p.m.

  • Visit to the Petroglyphs.
  • Visit to the María Luisa Biscuit Workshop.
  • Folklore Show.
  • Visit to the Church of San Juan.
  • Typical lunch.

The story they tell in San Juan Nepomuceno, Bolívar, is that the ‘María Luisa’ cookie, a delicious delicacy that has become an obligatory reference in the municipality and is undoubtedly part of the town’s culinary heritage.

It was born more than half a century ago. They are white and cherry cookies that adorn the windows of the bakeries and shops in the neighborhoods, on the hot corners of San Juan Nepomuceno.

They are made of flour, covered with meringue – made with beaten egg and sugar – and a dulce de leche filling, the recipe for which is a secret!

It is not known where the imperial name of this biscuit comes from or what its origin is. A village matron and a descendant of another empirical pastry chef, who has since died, claim her invention.
